                                   CHAPTER 1

In the book with the title Speak to Win reviewed, especially in Chapter 1, with the title The Arts of Speaking and Rhetoric, that talked about the art of speaking to influence and inspire.

Public speaking is the art of delivering messages effectively to influence, inspire, and move others. It’s more than just speaking fluently—the goal is to prompt the audience to take action or shift their perspective. History shows the difference between speakers who merely impress and those who truly motivate. For example, Demosthenes was praised for his words, but Alcibiades made people take immediate action. This illustrates that the true power of speech lies in its impact, not just in eloquence.

Aristotle introduced three main pillars in the art of speaking: logos, ethos, and pathos. Logos refers to logical reasoning and clear structure in arguments. Ethos is the speaker’s credibility, which helps build trust with the audience. Pathos appeals to emotions, triggering deeper and more personal responses. These elements work together to form effective and persuasive communication.

Communication is not only about words, but also how those words are delivered. According to Albert Mehrabian, only 7% of communication comes from words, 38% from tone of voice, and 55% from body language. This means facial expressions, intonation, and hand gestures play a major role in conveying messages. How we say something is often more powerful than what we say. Successful speakers are aware of the power of nonverbal communication.

A well-structured speech helps the audience easily grasp the message. It usually consists of three parts: introduction, body, and conclusion. The introduction presents the main topic, the body explains three key points, and the conclusion summarizes and invites action. A simple example can be seen in business speeches that discuss problems, solutions, and a call for change. A clear structure makes a speech more engaging and memorable.

To become a great speaker, one needs practice, self-awareness, and solid preparation. Reading poetry, studying speeches, or rehearsing in front of a mirror can help improve speaking skills. Listening to and observing other speakers also provides valuable insights. Anyone can learn public speaking with consistent effort and practice. Ultimately, speaking well is a powerful way to inspire and leave a lasting impression on others.
